MENTEES

Overview: Are you ready to take the next step in your career?  If you are looking for some advice, guidance and the opportunity to build industry relationships, to help you get to the next stage in your screen career, MentorHer is for you!

We seek to match you with Mentors that are willing to share their knowledge with others a few steps behind them so as to make your next steps just that little bit easier. We call this slipstreaming.

On top of this, mentoring is particularly powerful in promoting diversity within cultures and organisations.

If you still have unanswered questions you can contact us at MentorHer@wiftaustralia.org.au

MENTEE FAQ:

How will this benefit me?

There are many benefits to having a mentor. A good mentor can help a mentee become more efficient at work, learn new skills, develop greater confidence, create space to discuss points of craft and make more logical decisions.  In addition, a Mentor has capacity to support you in expanding your thinking and help you build a sense of connection. In this tough industry, relationships with a community can be crucial to wellbeing and longevity.

What can I expect from my Mentor?

You can expect your Mentor to provide you with guidance, and commitment to sharing their experiences and knowledge.  Your Mentor will also listen to your experience and possibly challenge you to think differently about the way you are approaching your career and/or craft.  Your Mentor won't do the work of resolving issues or removing obstacles for you; they will work with you and help you identify your own solutions.

What support will I receive?

WIFT Australia will provide a Facebook page for Mentees to chat and offer peer support. We will also be sending monthly check ins to see how you are journeying. We will also, from time to time, send through articles or other resources that we think may be beneficial to Mentees. At the end of the three months we will conduct a final check in and ask for feedback. Some chapters may also be able to run a July completion event, though this varies according to local capacity.

If there are any problems we will do our best to negotiate these in collaboration with you and your Mentor.  (See also Mentee FAQ ‘What if I don’t get along with my Mentor?’)

What if I don’t get along with my Mentor?

We understand that sometimes, despite the best intentions, people simply don’t click. If you sense this in the first meeting, please let us know as soon as possible and we will do our best to support including offering to rematch you. Even if the issue does not feel resolvable and there is mutual agreement to exit the program,  this is preferable to continuing or leaving in a way that doesn’t feel good. We want to support nourishing relationships based upon care and not those based upon discomfort and unnecessary duty.
